Top Notch Lunch Offer At Alimentum – review

Updated October 2017

Just up every foodie’s street! – Is it excessive to eat in a restaurant twice in one week? Not it’s pure indulgence and why should do with less if you can get some of the best food in Cambridge available?

Since the opening of Alimentum many years ago, I have been a regular diner. I have to admit, that there was a time when I stopped going as the quality sometimes varied, but since the arrival of Mark Poynton Alimentum has gone from strength to strength. This didn’t go completely unnoticed as they are now the proud owner of 1 Michelin Star in 2012, unfortunately much to our surprise, they lost it in 2017. In my opinion, it is only a matter of time before they get the 2nd.

Alimentum is one of the few restaurants in which I have eaten, which offers sherry with their cheese course in their flight of wine. Even in the days when Mark wasn’t heading up the kitchen. It is one of my favourite drinks with cheese. A fine glass of sherry is hard to beat. A few months ago I had a stunning cheese dish at Alimentum; Camembert with Onion stock. A very nice twist on the French onion soup. I loved it! Of course paired with a glass of sherry.  One very famous London based chef, who shall not be named, can take note of the cheese and Sherry pairing. Last year when I dined at his restaurant, no Sherry was available the only options;  a glass of red port, dessert wine or a glass of red wine.

This month is a sort of constant celebration with my birthday and heading up to the big day. So any excuse to have a good bite to eat. The lunchtime offer of Alimentum is hard to beat; three courses, a glass of wine and coffee for £30. Last Monday the excuse was to hear the stories of my other halves stag weekend in Amsterdam, today my two best friends from the Netherlands are coming for my hen party. So I will whisk them down from Cambridge City Airport straight down to Alimentum for a bite to eat.

Apart from their à la carte menu and tasting menu, their Supper Club is a good reason to go too. Due to commitments and popularity, I haven’t been yet, but hopefully, they can squeeze us in in May.
