02 Apr Beer Festival at the Green Man in Grantchester review
Great atmosphere on a frosty night – Last weekend saw the start of a series of beer festivals run by the Green Man in Grantchester in Grantchester this year. We made our way down there on Saturday evening by foot. From Cambridge city centre it’s always a lovely walk from Mill Pond through the woodlands along the river Cam and the Grantchester meadows. It’s one of my favourite walks in Cambridge. It’s even better when you know, that at the end you can sit down in a lovely pub or pub garden enjoying a local ale and delicious food. If a pub isn’t your scene, then you can retire in a lounger in the tea garden next door, the Orchard, where you can sip a cup of tea under ancient apple trees.
It was good to catch up with Shaun, the manager of the Green Man in Grantchester. Although Saturday night was quieter than Friday night due to the snow, the atmosphere was good. The festival at the Green Man is not only well known for its fine selection of beers but because of the excellent music too. Through the day you can enjoy an eclectic choice of music. On Saturday evening ‘Groove Tube’ was heating up the scene. Fantastic music to listen and dance to. We especially liked their version of “heard through the Grapevine”.
The great thing about the beer festival at the Green Man in Grantchester is that the pub is run separately. So if you want to dip in and out as we did, you can do so and enjoy a relaxed meal away from the scene. In the summer, they serve their excellent Gastro Pub food in the garden too. The best of both worlds or should I say three worlds? Nothing better than on a balmy sunny afternoon listening to the tunes of local bands, sipping local ales and enjoying excellent British food.
The food at the Green Man in Grantchester is always good, but I like the small touches such as the fish and chips served on newspaper! A way of serving fish and chips, which has been banned for many years in the UK. They can get away with it as they serve the food actually on greaseproof paper and put this on top of the newspaper.
